Elegant Home Decor: Simple Ways to Create a Collected Home

A beautiful home is about more than how it looks. It is about how it feels when you walk through the door at the end of the day.

I love creating that cozy feeling in simple ways. I have real candles, LED candles, and nightlights throughout my home. Some of my LED candles and lights come on automatically at a certain time in the evening. My large, beautiful Bible—the one I've had for years—has a place on my coffee table. Little touches like these make my home feel peaceful, comfortable, and personal.

I also love bringing flowers into my home. A simple floral arrangement can brighten a room and make an everyday space feel a little more special.

I think that's what makes a house feel like home. It doesn't have to be perfect or expensive. It just needs to have the things you love around you and make you happy to be there.

Choosing Pieces You Truly Love

When I choose something for my home, I want it to be something I truly love—not simply something that's popular or trending. A beautiful lamp, an interesting vase, a mirror, or a special piece for the table can change the feeling of a room without requiring a complete makeover. Sometimes it's those few well-chosen pieces that make a space feel finished and personal.

I don't believe you have to shop expensive designer brands to create a beautiful home. I shop in a variety of places, depending on what I'm looking for. I love discovering treasures at thrift stores, flea markets, and antique malls, but I also shop at Amazon, HomeGoods, Walmart, and Kirkland's. Sometimes the best find is something unexpected—even a garage sale on a Saturday morning. I enjoy putting different pieces together in a way that feels collected and personal.

For me, it's not about where something comes from or how much it costs. It's about finding pieces that have character, work beautifully in my home, and are worth bringing home.

Some of the pieces I especially love include:

  • Pretty lighting: I love lamps, and I have to admit, I really love a beautiful lampshade. There are so many pretty patterns, textures, and different materials to choose from now. Sometimes changing the shade is all it takes to give an old lamp a whole new look.

  • Decorative mirrors:  I love a pretty mirror. Sometimes it’s the frame that catches my eye more than the mirror itself. A good one can really change the look of a room.

  • Vases & decorative pieces: I love vases, but I also love those little decorative pieces that give a room some personality. I’m always looking for things with an interesting shape, pretty detail, or something that just catches my eye. They don't have to be expensive—I just have to like them.

  • Candles & Candleholders: I love candles too. There are so many different styles now, from traditional tapers and pretty candleholders to LED candles that you can put on a timer. I love changing them out for different seasons and occasions. They add such a cozy feeling to a room, and you don't have to wait for a special occasion to enjoy them.

  • Pretty Things for the Table: I also love finding pretty things for the table. A nice tray or serving piece can make an everyday meal feel a little more special. It doesn't have to be fancy—we're just eating dinner!

I’ve also gathered more of my favorite home finds on my Amazon storefront (paid link) from vases and decorative pieces to candles, candleholders, lampshades, and more.

A Home That Feels Collected, Not Cluttered

I also think there is a difference between a home that feels collected and one that simply feels full. I don't want every surface covered with decorations. I would rather have a few pieces that I really love than a room filled with things just for the sake of having something there.

Every so often, I look around and ask myself if I still love something or if it is simply taking up space. Sometimes clearing away a few things makes the pieces I really enjoy stand out even more.

At the end of the day, I don't think a beautiful home is about perfection. Life happens. There are dishes in the kitchen, things get moved around, and sometimes the house doesn't look anything like the pictures in a magazine—and that's okay.

For me, home is meant to be lived in and enjoyed. I want it to feel comfortable when I'm curled up on the couch with my little dog, welcoming when friends or neighbors stop by, and peaceful at the end of the day.

Take your time, find the things you love, and don't be afraid to mix an old treasure with something new. You don't have to spend a fortune to create a home that feels beautiful and truly yours.

With love and blessings,

Susan
